Slow and steady wins the race
Dear friends,
I am pleased to share some good news in this month’s newsletter: a Bosnian victim finally saw her alleged aggressor charged; the United Nations recognized the rights of two Nepalese families; former dictator Hissène Habré was definitively found guilty of crimes against humanity.
These victories fly in the face of pessimistic discourses on justice and human rights. They may seem small, but they change lives in a significant manner. Survivors may find closure, heal their wounds and, at last, move on.
Small steps may be less impressive than earthquake policies – and yes, legal proceedings are complex and frustratingly long. But they can work and deliver what we all strive for: hope and justice. As victim K. from Bosnia put it, hearing stories of successes builds up the resilience of those who need it the most.
The doom and gloom has no place in the fight against impunity. Let us rejoice in our victories, no matter how small, and build on them so that the future may bring many more.
